Danio margaritatus
A tiny fish with jewel-like body scattered with white pearl patterns. A gem for planted tanks.
The celestial pearl danio (Danio margaritatus), also marketed as the galaxy rasbora, is an exceptionally small danionid fish native to a limited range of small ponds and streams in Shan State, Myanmar, near Inle Lake, at elevations exceeding 1,000 m. Described as a new species in 2006, it immediately caused a sensation in the aquarium world with its extraordinary appearance: a deep navy-blue body peppered with pearl-white to yellow spots, with vivid orange-red striped fins — an appearance so stunning it earned the 'galaxy' nickname. Its diminutive size of approximately 2 cm makes it perfect for nano aquariums. Following initial discovery, concerns arose about collection-driven population crashes, but successful captive breeding has since stabilized the hobby supply. Celestial pearl danios prefer densely planted aquariums — fine-leaved plants and moss provide essential cover — and thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.5–7.5) at 20–26°C. Their highland origins mean they dislike high temperatures; sustained heat above 26°C causes stress. Breeding on clumps of java moss or similar plants is achievable for patient hobbyists.
