Hyphessobrycon flammeus
Small tetra with vivid flame-like red rear half. Hardy and easy to keep, prefers slightly acidic water. Particularly beautiful in schools, popular beginner species that looks stunning in planted tanks.
The fire tetra (Hyphessobrycon flammeus) is a small characin native to rivers around Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo states in southeastern Brazil. Growing to 3–4 cm, its coloration is elegantly divided: a silver-white front half marked by two dark vertical blotches transitions into a brilliantly flame-red rear half — perfectly matching its evocative name. One of the hardiest and most adaptable tetras available, it tolerates a wide range of water conditions (pH 6.0–7.5, 22–28°C) and is highly recommended for community tanks and beginner aquarists alike. In schools of ten or more, the collective red coloration creates a striking display reminiscent of dancing flames against green planted backgrounds. Peaceful and compatible with most small fish and shrimp, it accepts virtually all aquarium foods without difficulty. Breeding on fine-leaved plants in slightly acidic water is achievable even for novice hobbyists. Known in the aquarium trade since the 1920s–1930s, the fire tetra is a time-tested classic whose durability and beauty have earned it consistent popularity across generations of fishkeepers.
