AARS winner from 1952. Deep crimson velvety petals with strong Damask fragrance. Classic high-centered form excels in competitions. Slightly heat-sensitive but autumn blooms are superb.
Bred by Walter Lammerts (USA) in 1952 and an AARS winner, 'Chrysler Imperial' represents the apex of mid-century American hybrid tea rose breeding. Its velvety deep crimson blooms in the classic high-centered exhibition form are accompanied by a rich, full Damask fragrance that won it the ARS James Alexander Gamble Fragrance Medal. The plant has some sensitivity to heat — summer blooms may be less impressive — but autumn flowers are frequently of exhibition quality in both color and form. Growing to 1.2–1.5m, it requires good sun and air circulation. Pruning to one-third in winter, with a light summer cut to prepare for autumn flowering, is the recommended management.
