A small Japanese epiphytic orchid with many cultivated varieties, a classical horticultural plant.
Dendrobium moniliforme (sekkoku) is a small epiphytic orchid native to rocky outcrops and old trees in Japan, the Korean Peninsula, southern China, and Southeast Asia. Plants grow 5–15 cm with slender cane-like stems and small leathery leaves. The fragrant white to pale pink flowers, 2–3 cm across, appear in early summer (May–June). Cold-hardy and well-adapted to the Japanese climate, it has been cultivated since the Edo period as chouseiran, with hundreds of named cultivars selected for variegated, striped, or dwarf foliage. Mount culture on driftwood, cork, or rocks is aesthetically preferred; sphagnum pots are also common.
