Cattleya bowringiana
A Cattleya species with clusters of purple-pink autumn flowers, prolific, gorgeous and easy to grow.
Cattleya bowringiana is an epiphytic orchid native to tropical forests in Guatemala and Belize. Two-leafed pseudobulbs grow 30–50 cm tall. In autumn (September–November), each stem produces five to twenty vivid deep pink to purple flowers, 5–8 cm across, in a spectacular cluster—one of the most floriferous Cattleya species. Cultivation requires bright indirect light, temperatures of 15–28°C, a free-draining bark or pumice medium, ample water and fertilizer during growth, and a dry rest in summer to autumn to initiate flower spikes. Its prolific flowering and robust constitution make it one of the more approachable Cattleya species for growers.
