A shade-tolerant plant with beautiful white spathe flowers. Famous from NASA's air purification research.
Spathiphyllum, the peace lily, is a genus of about 60 species of flowering plants in the family Araceae, native to tropical regions of the Americas and southeastern Asia. Among the most shade-tolerant houseplants available, it is one of few that can flower under artificial lighting alone. Its elegant white spathes and club-like spadices appear mainly in spring and summer. An exceptionally communicative plant: water-stressed peace lilies dramatically wilt, giving a clear signal of thirst, and recover rapidly once watered. The soil should be kept consistently moist; it prefers humidity and dislikes prolonged dryness. Recognised in NASA's Clean Air Study as particularly effective at removing ammonia, benzene, and formaldehyde from indoor air. The deep green, glossy foliage is attractive year-round even when not in flower. One of the most universally recommended houseplants for beginners.
