Fouquieria fasciculata
A rare Fouquieria from Mexico with thick trunk and red flowers.
Fouquieria fasciculata grows on limestone terrain in the Tehuacán Valley of Hidalgo state, Mexico, and is a rare member of its genus. It develops a thick, swollen trunk with grayish-white, rough-textured bark and produces vivid red flowers—among the showiest in the genus. Leaves are small and deciduous. Growth is very slow and natural populations have declined, resulting in CITES protection. Intense direct sun and extremely porous soil are required. Moderate watering during growth and drought in winter are appropriate. It has reasonable cold tolerance. Alongside F. columnaris, it represents the most sought-after Fouquieria species in specialist collections.
