Agave univittata
A sharp agave with central leaf line and serrated edge spines. Relatively fast growing.
Agave univittata is a medium-sized species distributed from Tamaulipas and Nuevo León in Mexico into southern Texas. Previously treated as a variety of Agave lophantha, it is now often recognized as a distinct species. Like lophantha, it features a pale central stripe along each leaf and white to pale yellow marginal teeth, forming a sharp, well-organized rosette. Mature plants reach 40–70 cm tall and 60–80 cm wide. It is among the faster-growing agaves, building an attractive form within a few years. Full sun and outdoor cultivation are ideal. Water when the soil dries; avoid overwatering. A well-draining mix is recommended. Cold tolerance is reasonably good, allowing outdoor year-round growing in many parts of Japan. Its vigor, attractive striped foliage, and ease of care make it a good choice for those new to agave cultivation. It is often grouped with A. lophantha as part of the 'striped agave' category among Japanese enthusiasts.
