Agave karwinskii
An agave from Oaxaca, Mexico. Unique tree-like growth habit with rosettes forming on woody stems. Also known as 'Palo de Mezcal' and used in mezcal production.
Agave karwinskii is a large agave native to dry valleys and rocky terrain in Oaxaca and Puebla, Mexico. Its most distinctive feature is its tree-like growth habit, setting it apart from most other agaves. Over time, it develops a thick trunk reaching 2–5 m in height, topped with a relatively small rosette of densely packed dark green, narrow leaves. Marginal teeth are small, but the terminal spine is sharp and prominent. In Mexico, it is also used as a raw material for mezcal production, giving it cultural significance. Tree-forming agaves are rare, and the bonsai-like character of this species has attracted strong collector interest. Cold hardiness is moderate, tolerating temperatures to about 0°C, but frost protection is advisable.
