A small rainbowfish shining in neon blue. Male morning flashing display is spectacular.
The neon dwarf rainbowfish (Melanotaenia praecox) is endemic to the Mamberamo River system in West Papua (New Guinea). At 5–7 cm, it is among the smaller rainbowfishes, yet males dazzle with electric neon-blue body coloration and vivid red-to-orange fins — a combination that glows brilliantly under aquarium lighting and creates stunning visual impact in planted tanks. Females are silver-green with orange fin edging. Among the most popular rainbowfishes in the hobby due to their compact size, brilliant color, and relative ease of care, neon dwarf rainbows thrive in slightly alkaline to neutral water (pH 7.0–8.0) at 24–28°C. Keeping six or more fish encourages active 'morning flashing' displays in which competing males light up with maximum color intensity. Peaceful and community-compatible, they accept a varied omnivorous diet of quality granules, flake food, frozen bloodworms, and brine shrimp. Breeding on fine-leaved plants or wool spawning mops in slightly hard, neutral water is achievable for intermediate aquarists.
