An Indonesian blue tongue skink. Often smaller and darker than Australian species.
The Irian Jaya blue-tongued skink is a population of blue-tongued skink (Tiliqua scincoides) from the Indonesian province of Papua (formerly Irian Jaya). It is generally considered a regional variant rather than a fully separate species. Compared to Australian populations, Irian Jaya individuals tend to be somewhat smaller (adults 40–55 cm), darker in overall coloration, and may show less distinct banding. Like all blue-tongued skinks, they display the species' characteristic blue tongue as a defensive bluff. They are omnivorous, eating vegetables, fruits, insects, and small animals, and are regarded as docile and handleable. Care is similar to Australian blue-tongued skinks: a basking spot of around 33°C, a cool retreat at 25°C, moderate humidity, and a varied diet are the key requirements.
