Hawkfish

Hawkfishes (family Cirrhitidae) are a group of small to medium-sized, bottom-associated marine fishes found on coral reefs throughout tropical seas, comprising approximately 35 species. All share a characteristic anatomical feature: the lower rays of the pectoral fins are thickened and free from the fin membrane, functioning as legs to perch on coral heads and rock formations. From these elevated vantage points they scan for prey and launch rapid predatory strikes — a hawk-like hunting strategy that gives the family its common name. Popular aquarium species include the flame hawkfish (vivid crimson), the longnose hawkfish (red grid pattern), and the spotted hawkfish. A 60–150 litre or larger aquarium furnished with suitable perching structures is appropriate. Carnivorous, hawkfishes will prey on small fish and shrimp; careful tankmate selection is essential.
