The Shikoku is a Japanese breed of dog originating in the mountainous regions of Shikoku island, where it was used to hunt boar and deer. It was designated a natural monument of Japan in 1937. The breed has a wolf-like appearance with a well-muscled, agile body. Shikoku are loyal to their owners but wary of strangers and tend to be selective with other dogs. They require substantial daily exercise, particularly in natural outdoor settings such as mountain hiking.
