The Dalmatian is a breed of large-sized dog, noted for its unique white coat marked with black or brown-colored spots. Originating in the historical region of Dalmatia, in Croatia, the breed was used as a carriage dog in its early days, running alongside horse-drawn coaches and guarding them. In later years, Dalmatians became associated with fire stations in the United States, earning the nickname "firehouse dog." Dalmatians are energetic, athletic, and require substantial daily exercise. The breed is known to have a predisposition to congenital deafness.
