Guide to rainbow fish: Boesemani, Neon Dwarf, Threadfin — species profiles, water requirements, and community tank compatibility.
Rainbow fish from Australia and New Guinea display increasing iridescence as they mature, creating some of the most spectacular schooling displays in freshwater aquariums.
Boesemani Rainbow: 10-12cm. Front half blue-purple, back half vivid orange. pH 7.0-8.0, 26-30C, groups of 5+ recommended.
Neon Dwarf Rainbow: 6-8cm. Blue body with red fins. pH 6.5-7.5, 22-26C. Perfect for planted tanks.
Celebes Rainbow: 7-8cm. Transparent body with yellow fins. Prefers slightly alkaline water.
Threadfin Rainbow: 5-6cm. Males develop elongated finnage. Peaceful, planted-tank suitable.
Most species prefer slightly alkaline water (pH 7.0-8.0), moderate flow, and 90cm+ tanks for larger species. Omnivorous and readily accept prepared foods.
Eggs are deposited on spawning mops and hatch in 7-10 days. Fry are small, requiring infusoria as first food.
Bri-Choku breeders offer mature, fully-colored rainbow fish for direct purchase.
