Zoanthid Basics

Zoanthids (Zoanthus, Palythoa) are colonial soft corals with individual polyps measuring 5-15mm in diameter. Color variety is extraordinary — green, orange, red, blue, purple, pink, and multicolor combinations. They spread by producing new polyps from a connected mat. Easy to frag by cutting the mat between polyps.

Mushroom Coral Basics

Discosoma and Rhodactis species form flat, mushroom-shaped polyps. They reproduce by splitting or dropping tissue fragments. Very forgiving of water quality fluctuations. Some varieties inflate dramatically, reaching 10cm+ in diameter.

Care Requirements

Both thrive under low to moderate light (PAR 50-150) and gentle flow. Strong light or flow causes them to retract or detach. Place on lower rockwork or shaded areas. Feed occasionally with small meaty foods for faster growth.

Placement Considerations

Give each colony room to grow — mushrooms especially can shade or smother neighboring corals. Zoanthids can be aggressive toward nearby stony corals. Both reproduce readily and can overgrow unwanted areas if not managed.

Palythoa species contain palytoxin, a potent toxin. Always wear gloves when handling and never expose cut surfaces to eyes or open wounds. Work in a well-ventilated area.
