A tetra with scales sparkling like diamonds. Mature males have elegantly elongated fins.
The diamond tetra (Moenkhausia pittieri) is a characin native to Lake Valencia and its tributary rivers in Venezuela. Growing to 5–6 cm, its appeal lies in the spectacular iridescent quality of its scales — each reflecting silver, violet, and gold depending on the angle of light, creating an overall diamond-studded sparkle across the body. Mature males develop elegantly elongated dorsal and anal fins, adding a graceful silhouette to their glittering appearance. A vivid red upper iris adds further accent. Young specimens are relatively plain, making the dramatic transformation into adult coloration a rewarding experience for patient aquarists. Slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.5) at 24–28°C suits them well. Groups of ten or more create a mesmerizing school of shimmering fish against green planted backgrounds. Peaceful and active, they accept a varied diet of granules, flake food, and frozen foods. Breeding on fine-leaved plants in slightly acidic soft water is achievable.
