Small South American cichlid. Males display vivid colors and unique behaviors. Over 100 species available.
Apistogramma is a large genus of dwarf cichlids native to South America, primarily the Amazon and Orinoco river systems, with over 100 described species. Males typically reach 5–8 cm and display spectacular coloration — vivid reds, yellows, blues, and oranges varying by species — while females are smaller and more subdued, turning yellow as a warning coloration during breeding. Most species prefer soft, slightly acidic water (pH 5.5–7.0) at 24–28°C; driftwood, leaf litter, and dense plantings provide essential hiding spots. Apistogrammas are cave-spawning cichlids: females select sheltered sites such as coconut shells or driftwood hollows, lay eggs, and provide intense parental care. During breeding, females defend their territory aggressively. Many species naturally practice polygyny, allowing one male to maintain a harem with multiple females each in separate territories — a fascinating dynamic for experienced hobbyists. Their compact size, stunning diversity, and rich spawning behaviors make Apistogramma a deeply rewarding genus for dedicated aquarists.
