An infestation of Otodectes cynotis mites in the ear canal, commonly seen in kittens and cats in multi-cat households. Intense itching and dark brown ear discharge are characteristic; the condition responds well to appropriate treatment.

• Vigorous head shaking or scratching at the ears
• Increased dark brown, dry ear discharge
• Redness and swelling of the ear canal
• Odor coming from the ears

• Infestation by Otodectes cynotis ear mites
• Contact with infected cats or other infested animals
• Exposure to infected cats outdoors
• Spread within multi-cat households

Limit outdoor exposure, examine and quarantine new cats before introduction in multi-cat environments, and regularly inspect and clean ears.
