Raphionacme flanaganii
A South African milkweed-family caudex with gray round tuber producing vines, hardy for beginners.
Raphionacme flanaganii grows in grassland habitats in South Africa, belonging to the Apocynaceae family. It develops a gray, somewhat rounded tuber at or just below the soil surface, producing slender twining stems. Damaged tissue exudes white latex. It is one of the more robust and forgiving caudex species, frequently recommended for beginners. Full sun to bright partial shade with well-draining soil is appropriate. Moderate watering during the growing season (spring through autumn) and reduced to no watering in winter suit it well. Cold tolerance is reasonable compared to many caudex plants. Its accessibility, affordability, and ease of culture make it an ideal introduction to South African caudex plants.
