Pachypodium brevicaule
Known as Ebisu-warai in Japan, with a flat caudex shape and yellow flowers.
Pachypodium brevicaule grows on exposed quartzite and granite outcrops at elevations of 1,000–2,000 m in the central highlands of Madagascar. Known in Japan as Ebisu-warai (Laughing Ebisu), it is instantly recognizable by its flattened, disc-shaped caudex that spreads laterally far more than it grows tall. This unique morphology is an adaptation to the cooler, mistier montane climate of its natural habitat. Mature specimens can exceed 30 cm in diameter. In spring, it produces numerous bright yellow flowers that give the plant its joyful Japanese name. Growth is extremely slow, and wild collection has made it increasingly rare. Cultivation requires full sun, excellent drainage, restrained watering, and careful avoidance of summer humidity. Winter dormancy with complete drought and temperatures above 10°C is essential. Its charming form and rarity make it one of the most coveted species among caudex enthusiasts.
