Madagascar Lace Plant

Aponogeton madagascariensis is a perennial aquatic plant endemic to Madagascar, commonly known as the Lace Plant. Its most distinctive feature is the ethereal lace-patterned leaves where the leaf tissue is absent, leaving only a net-like framework of veins—an appearance unlike any other aquatic plant. It is regarded as a high-difficulty species for advanced aquarists due to its extraordinary appearance and demanding cultivation requirements. Growth requires cool water (20–23°C), moderate to strong current, and high lighting; particular care is needed in summer when water temperatures rise. As a bulbous plant, it may shed leaves during dormancy, but if the bulb remains alive it will regenerate. Substrate fertilizer (root-zone application) is more effective than liquid fertilizer, and insufficient nutrition tends to make the lace pattern coarser.
