A collection of frequently asked questions about aquatic plant care, covering equipment, CO2 injection, lighting, and more
The basics are a tank, aquatic plant soil, plant-specific LED lighting, a filter, a heater, and planting tools. Start with easy plants that don't need CO2 (Anubias nana, Java moss, hornwort) to keep costs down. Budget around $70–210 USD for startup.
Plant-specific LED lights are ideal — aim for 2,000–3,000+ lumens for a 60 cm tank. Run lights 8–10 hours daily on a timer. Longer periods promote algae. Full-spectrum LEDs with red wavelengths enhance red plant coloration.
Many plants grow well without CO2. However, CO2 is essential for lush carpets and stem plants like Rotala. Methods include pressurized cylinders, DIY yeast, and tablets — pressurized is most stable. If unsure which plants to choose, consult a grower through our Aquatic Plants category.
Nutrient-rich soil promotes growth but requires frequent water changes initially. Adsorptive soil offers stability and is beginner-friendly. Layer 3–5 cm deep, thinner in front and deeper in back for an attractive layout.
For stem plants, cut leaving 5–10 cm from the base and replant the tops. Trim carpeting plants aggressively when too dense. For epiphytic plants, remove old brown leaves at the base. After trimming, do a water change and remove all clippings.
Main causes are excessive light, long photoperiods, nutrient imbalances, and infrequent water changes. Reduce lighting hours, perform frequent water changes, and add algae-eating crew (Amano shrimp, otocinclus, etc.). If you need help, contact us.
Liquid fertilizers suit floating and epiphytic plants; root tabs are best for stem and foreground species. Potassium is prone to deficiency — dose it regularly. Iron-enriched liquid fertilizer enhances red plant coloration. Start with small doses, as over-fertilizing promotes algae.
Anubias nana, Java moss, hornwort, Vallisneria, and Java fern are all great for beginners — all grow without CO2 under moderate lighting. Browse actual listings in our Aquatic Plants category.
On BreederDirect, you can buy from verified aquatic plant growers. Home-grown plants come with accurate pesticide-free information — important for shrimp tanks. Fair prices with no middleman, plus direct growing advice. For details, see our User Guide.
Most plants thrive at 22–28°C (72–82°F), with 25°C (77°F) being optimal. Above 30°C, plants may melt and algae proliferates. Use a cooling fan or chiller in summer, and a heater in winter. For more, see our User Guide.
