AARS 1963. Its vivid coral-orange color was revolutionary at introduction. Strong fruity fragrance combined with striking color captivated rose lovers worldwide.
Bred by Tantau (Germany) in 1960 and an AARS winner in 1963, 'Tropicana' (known in Europe as 'Super Star') caused a sensation at its introduction by bringing a vivid coral-orange coloring to hybrid teas that had simply not existed before — a color so distinctive that it effectively created the orange rose category for the modern era. A strong fruity fragrance adds to its appeal. It was inducted into the World Rose Hall of Fame, recognizing its lasting contribution to rose culture. Full sun is essential to develop the most vivid coloring. Growing to 1.2–1.5m, it is a vigorous repeat-bloomer; regular deadheading after each flush extends the display continuously into autumn.
