A highland orchid with distinctive triangular flowers, preferring cool and humid conditions.
Masdevallia is a large genus of over 500 orchid species native primarily to Andean cloud forests in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru at elevations of 1,500–3,500 m. The flowers are distinctive for their three greatly enlarged sepals, each drawn out into a long tail-like extension, while petals and lip are reduced. Flower colors include vivid red, orange, yellow, white, purple, and complex combinations. Plants are compact and lack pseudobulbs. The primary cultivation challenge is their intolerance of heat: temperatures must remain below 25°C, ideally below 20°C in summer, accompanied by humidity of 70–90% and good air circulation. Sphagnum moss or fine bark is the preferred medium. In Japan, providing adequate summer cooling is the main difficulty.
