Begonia maculata
A stylish begonia with white polka dots on dark green leaves. Beautiful contrast with red leaf undersides.
Begonia maculata, the polka dot begonia or trout begonia, is a perennial in the family Begoniaceae, native to Brazil. Its distinctive elongated, dark olive-green leaves are decorated with irregular silver-white spots on the upper surface, while the undersides are rich burgundy-red — a contrast that is both striking and photogenic. Growth is relatively fast, reaching 0.3–1 m. Bright indirect light enhances the spot patterns and encourages the production of delicate white flowers. Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings; overwatering causes root rot. Avoid wetting the leaves when watering — bottom watering is ideal. High humidity is preferred, but good air circulation should be maintained to prevent fungal issues. Easily propagated from stem cuttings. Its dramatic patterned foliage has made it one of the most widely shared plants on social media in recent years.
