Tylecodon Paniculatus

Tylecodon paniculatus, the Butter Tree, grows on dry, rocky slopes in Namaqualand, South Africa, belonging to the Crassulaceae family. It develops a thick, yellowish trunk with slender pencil-like branches. As a winter-growing species (active autumn through spring), it produces leaves and red flowers during the cooler months and goes fully dormant in summer. The entire plant is highly toxic—historic livestock poisoning incidents attest to its potency—and must be handled with great caution. Growth is slow. During the growing season, full direct sun and moderate watering are appropriate; summer dormancy requires complete drought. Cold tolerance is reasonable. The unusual yellowish trunk coloration and rarity of Namaqualand caudex plants contribute to its appeal among specialist collectors.
