Stephania erecta
A caudex plant with a round tuber producing a single stem with round leaves, viral on social media.
Stephania erecta is native to Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, and belongs to the Menispermaceae family. Its viral social media popularity stems from the charming combination of a smooth, round, gray-beige flattened tuber from which a single erect stem rises, topped by perfectly round, peltate (shield-shaped) leaves reminiscent of lotus pads. During the growing season (spring through autumn), the plant produces its characteristic stem and leaves before going completely dormant and leafless in winter. Growth is slow. It prefers bright indirect light to gentle direct sun—intense midday sun can scorch the leaves. Well-draining soil with moderate moisture retention is appropriate, unlike the pure grit mixes suited to desert species. Moderate watering during growth with complete drought during winter dormancy is standard. Minimum temperature around 10°C is recommended. Care must be taken not to over-dry dormant tubers. The photogenic combination of round tuber and round leaves has made it enormously popular on social media platforms.
