Adenia glauca
A Passiflora-family caudex with a large green caudex and tri-lobed leaves with climbing stems.
Adenia glauca is native to arid zones from East Africa through southern Africa and belongs to the Passifloraceae family. Its most dramatic feature is the large, glaucous green to blue-green spherical to oblate caudex, which can become impressively massive. From the caudex emerge twining stems with three- to five-lobed leaves. Flowers have the characteristic Passifloraceae structure but are small and inconspicuous. The entire plant is toxic and must be handled with caution. Growth can be relatively fast under good conditions, but building a large caudex requires many years. Full sun to bright indirect light and highly porous soil are appropriate. Generous watering during the growing season (spring to autumn) gives way to complete drought during winter dormancy. Minimum temperature should remain above 10°C. The commanding presence of the large glaucous caudex and its rarity make it a prized species among collectors.
