Nepenthes spectabilis
A highland Nepenthes from Sumatra with strikingly beautiful striped peristome.
Nepenthes spectabilis is a highland species native to the mountains of northern Sumatra, Indonesia, found at approximately 1,400–2,200 m elevation. The species name ('conspicuous' or 'spectacular') is thoroughly justified by its most distinctive feature: a strikingly beautiful peristome adorned with bold alternating stripes of red and white or cream, which are among the most vivid of any Nepenthes. The pitchers are also large and well-formed. As a highland species, N. spectabilis requires daytime temperatures of 18–25°C with night temperatures of 8–15°C, sphagnum-based media, and 70–90% humidity. Its dramatic striped peristome has made it one of the most sought-after Sumatran highland Nepenthes in cultivation.
