Nepenthes ampullaria
A unique Nepenthes clustering pitchers on the ground, decomposing fallen leaves for nutrition.
Nepenthes ampullaria is a lowland species with a broad distribution across Borneo, Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula, and New Guinea. It is notable for producing numerous small, rounded pitchers clustered at ground level in a distinctive rosette arrangement. The pitchers have widely open lids that facilitate the collection of leaf litter, and the plant has evolved to derive a significant proportion of its nitrogen from decomposing organic matter rather than exclusively from captured insects—making it unusually detritivorous among carnivorous plants. Cultivation requires warm temperatures (20–35°C), high humidity (70–90%), and sphagnum-based media. It is intolerant of cold. Its unusual ground-hugging pitcher arrangement and detritivorous habits make it one of the most botanically distinctive Nepenthes species.
