Drosera prolifera
A unique sundew producing plantlets on flower stalks, spreading in an interesting creeping manner.
Drosera prolifera, the hen-and-chickens sundew, is native to the humid tropical rainforest understory of northeastern Queensland, Australia, growing in shaded, constantly moist environments along stream banks. Its most remarkable characteristic is an exceptional capacity for vegetative reproduction: the flower stalks regularly produce numerous plantlets (adventitious buds) at nodes and at the tip, often before the stalk even reaches the soil—hence the common name. Like D. adelae, it is adapted to low-light conditions and must be protected from direct sun. Cultivation requires consistently moist sphagnum media, tray watering with pure or rainwater, warm temperatures (20–28°C), and bright indirect light. Its prolific multiplication and unusual propagation biology make it a favorite curiosity among carnivorous plant enthusiasts.
