A popular foreground plant with densely packed small round leaves. Grows without CO2, easy to carpet.
Micranthemum tweediei 'Monte Carlo' is a foreground aquatic plant native to Argentina, bearing densely packed leaves of approximately 2–3 mm that creep low across the substrate in a compact, carpet-forming growth habit. Broadly known in aquascaping under the trade name 'Monte Carlo,' it is frequently treated as synonymous with or closely related to New Large Pearl Grass (Micranthemum sp. 'Monte Carlo'). Its naturally prostrate runners spread laterally under moderate to bright illumination, forming a lush green mat without the extreme technical demands of Glossostigma or Hemianthus callitrichoides. CO2 supplementation is not strictly required but dramatically improves growth rate and carpet density. Root tabs placed beneath the planting area further boost vigor. The fine leaf structure provides excellent microhabitat for dwarf shrimp. Widely recommended as the entry-level carpeting plant for aquarists seeking their first foreground lawn.
