A beautiful stem plant with delicate needle-like leaves. Grows without CO2, beginner-friendly background plant.
Limnophila sessiliflora is a stem plant in the family Plantaginaceae (formerly Scrophulariaceae), native to wetlands and rice paddies across India and Southeast Asia, where it may grow emersed or submerged. Sold in the trade as 'Ambulia,' its whorled, finely divided leaves create a feathery, soft aesthetic that is particularly effective in background planting. Its most notable characteristic is outstanding hardiness: it grows vigorously at moderate light levels without CO2 supplementation, making it one of the most forgiving stem plants available. Growth is fast, requiring frequent trimming, but replanted stem cuttings establish without difficulty. Superficially similar to Cabomba but considerably easier to cultivate. The submerged form produces noticeably finer leaves than the emersed form. Hardy enough for goldfish tanks, it has served as a reliable beginner stem plant for decades.
