Alternanthera Reineckii

Alternanthera reineckii is a stem plant in the family Amaranthaceae native to South America, and is the archetypal red aquarium plant for mid to background accent planting. Leaf surfaces range from deep crimson to pink, with vivid red-purple undersides, creating bold contrast against green planting. Strong illumination is the primary determinant of coloration intensity; CO2 injection deepens the pigmentation further, and regular dosing with iron-rich liquid fertilizers has a pronounced positive effect. Growth rate is relatively slow for a stem plant, making it less demanding in terms of trimming frequency. Propagation is by cutting and replanting stems. Several cultivars and varieties circulate in the trade, including the compact 'Mini' and the broader-leaved 'Rosaefolia,' offering flexibility in placement. Slightly acidic to neutral water is preferred. Intermediate-level difficulty reflects the consistent management required to sustain vivid red coloration.
