Rex Guinea Pig

The Rex guinea pig is characterized by its short, coarse, upright coat (approximately 1.5–2 cm in length), produced by a genetic mutation causing the hair shafts to grow without the normal downward curl. Adults measure 20–30 cm and weigh 800–1,300 g. The coat has a rougher, more bristly texture compared to the Teddy guinea pig, though both are short-haired rex-type breeds. Rex guinea pigs are generally docile, sociable, and easy to handle, making them suitable for families and owners of varying experience levels. Coat maintenance is relatively low-effort compared to long-haired breeds, though regular nail trimming is important as nails tend to grow quickly. Diet consists of unlimited timothy hay, appropriate pellets, and daily vitamin C supplementation. Common health concerns include scurvy, urolithiasis, and respiratory infections. Lifespan is 4–7 years.
