Lunkarya Guinea Pig

The Lunkarya guinea pig is a long-haired, curly-coated breed originating in Sweden in the 1980s from a spontaneous mutation in a Peruvian guinea pig. Adults measure 20–30 cm and weigh 800–1,200 g. Their coat is characterized by coarse, dense, hard-textured curls—distinguishing them from the softer curls of the Texel. As the coat grows, pronounced waves and ringlets develop, creating a shaggy, distinctive appearance. The hindquarters are particularly prone to soiling and matting and require daily inspection. Their temperament is gentle and sociable; housing in pairs or small groups is strongly recommended. Diet must include unlimited timothy hay and daily vitamin C supplementation. Common health concerns include scurvy, dermatitis, and digestive issues from hair ingestion. Lifespan is 4–7 years.
