Piebald medaka is a distinctive improved variety with irregular spotted patterns across the body. No two individuals share the same pattern, position, or color ratio, giving every fish a one-of-a-kind quality. Piebald patterns arise from the combination of transparent-scale traits and irregular pigment expression. Fixation rate for ideal piebald patterns is low, requiring mass breeding and selection. Adaptable to outdoor or indoor keeping in 5–30°C, neutral to slightly alkaline water. White containers with top-view observation best display the patterns. The unpredictability of pattern development adds a 'lucky draw' excitement to breeding this variety.
