Otohime medaka is an improved variety with orange-red body and external body light, named after Princess Otohime of Ryugu-jo (the sea palace from the Japanese folktale Urashima Taro). Like Youkihi and Koutei, it belongs to the red medaka lineage, but the addition of external body light elevates its magnificence. External light is graded from 'weak' to 'strong,' 'super,' and 'full-body (iron mask),' with full-body coverage being the most prized. Outdoor sunlight combined with astaxanthin- and carotenoid-rich color-enhancing food produces the most beautiful vermilion coloration and external light. Hardy in 5–30°C, neutral to slightly alkaline water. Selective breeding of wide-light, vividly colored individuals improves quality.
