The royal dottyback (Pictichromis paccagnellae) is a small marine fish of the family Pseudochromidae found in the western Pacific. Its striking two-tone coloration, vivid purple on the front half and bright yellow on the rear, gives it a strong presence in the aquarium despite its small size. Hardy and a willing eater that quickly accepts prepared foods, it is easy to keep. However, it is feisty and tends to be aggressive toward fish of similar or smaller size and toward conspecifics or close relatives, so it is best housed with assertive or sufficiently large tankmates, with plenty of hiding places to disperse territories. In a reef tank it rarely harms corals and is a popular species that adds color.
