Nemenzophyllia turbida
An LPS coral with beautiful fluffy tentacles. Similar to torch but finer, more delicate tentacles.
Fox coral (Nemenzophyllia turbida, family Plerogyridae) is a large-polyp stony coral found on Indo-Pacific reef slopes and beneath overhangs. Dense clusters of slender, hair-like tentacles create a fluffy, cloud-like appearance in shades of cream, white, green, and pink—with fluorescent green individuals being particularly prized. The visual effect resembles Torch or Hammer corals but with finer, softer texture. Moderate lighting (100–200 PAR) and gentle indirect flow are essential; strong direct current causes tentacles to remain retracted and the polyp to decline. Stable parameters (24–27°C, KH 8–10, Ca 400–420 ppm) are maintained as standard. Weekly target feeding with small shrimp or mysis noticeably enhances polyp volume and coloration. Sweeper tentacles extend nightly, requiring at least 15 cm clearance from neighboring corals. Despite its delicate appearance, fox coral proves reasonably hardy under correct conditions, placing it comfortably in the intermediate-level reef keeper's repertoire.
