A beautiful LPS coral with densely packed large polyps. Popular for vivid red and green colorations.
Blastomussa is a genus of large-polyp stony corals (family Plesiastreidae) distributed across Indo-Pacific reef slopes and lagoons. Dense clusters of round polyps, each 2–3 cm in diameter, display vivid combinations of red, green, purple, and blue. Polyps expand dramatically at night, revealing a texture quite different from their daytime appearance. Care is relatively straightforward: low to moderate lighting (50–150 PAR), gentle indirect flow, and stable water parameters (24–27°C, KH 8–10, Ca 400–420 ppm) support healthy growth. Regular target feeding with brine shrimp or mysis shrimp intensifies coloration. Colonies propagate naturally by budding, and fragging is easily accomplished. Their affordability, color variety, and forgiving nature make Blastomussa an excellent gateway coral for new reef keepers.
