Sarcocaulon Vanderietiae

Sarcocaulon vanderietiae grows in the arid Namaqualand region of South Africa within the Geraniaceae family (sometimes reclassified under Monsonia). Known as Bushman's Candle, its trunk is coated in a thick, waxy, highly water-resistant bark that is flammable when dry—historically used as tinder by indigenous peoples, hence the common name. The trunk is swollen and caudex-like, deciduous in dry seasons. Flowers are geranium-like in pink to white, charming and freely produced. It is a winter grower. During the growing season (autumn through spring), full sun and moderate watering are appropriate; summer requires complete drought. Reasonable cold tolerance. The waxy trunk and geranium-like flowers make it a distinctive representative of Geraniaceae caudex plants.
