A collection of frequently asked questions about caudex plant care, covering watering, dormancy management, rooting, popular species, and more
Caudex plants are succulents that store water in their swollen trunks or roots. Representative genera include Pachypodium, Adenium, and Operculicarya. Their plump caudex is the main attraction, with each specimen developing a unique form. Check out actual listings in our Caudex Plants category.
During the growing season (spring–autumn), water thoroughly 2–3 days after the soil is completely dry. In winter dormancy, either stop watering or limit to once a month depending on the species. Gently squeezing the caudex — if soft, it's time to water. Overwatering causes root rot, so exercise caution.
Most species prefer direct sunlight. Insufficient light prevents the caudex from developing. For indoor growing, place near a south-facing window and consider using grow lights. Dioscorea (elephant foot yam) is an exception that prefers partial shade.
Popular species include Pachypodium gracilius, Adenium obesum, Operculicarya pachypus, and Dioscorea elephantipes. Seed-grown plants are available at affordable prices. Check out listings in our Caudex Plants category.
For winter-dormant species, leaf drop signals dormancy. Stop or drastically reduce watering and maintain temperatures above 10°C (50°F). Resume watering in spring only after confirming new growth. The key is not to rush.
Remove dead roots, treat with fungicide, then encourage rooting via the water or soil method. Ideal conditions are 25–30°C (77–86°F), high humidity, and bright indirect light. Rooting takes 2 weeks to several months depending on the species. For rooting tips, consult growers in our Caudex Plants category.
Well-draining soil is essential. A typical mix centers on akadama, pumice, and hyuga soil. Unglazed terracotta or slit pots are ideal, and the pot should be slightly undersized relative to the caudex for safety.
Sow seeds on clean substrate in spring to early summer (May–July) and manage with bottom watering. Maintain 25–30°C and high humidity, then gradually acclimate seedlings after germination. Seed-grown plants adapt well to local conditions and offer the joy of cultivating a uniquely shaped specimen.
