Pterodiscus speciosus
A sesame-family caudex with beautiful pink-purple flowers and compact form.
Pterodiscus speciosus grows in dry regions spanning South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique, belonging to the Pedaliaceae (sesame) family. Its primary appeal is the profusion of beautiful pink to purple trumpet-shaped flowers produced on a compact plant. The caudex is a short swollen stem from which multiple branches with leaves arise. Flowers are characteristic of the sesame family—funnel-shaped and vividly colored. Growth is moderately slow but flowering is reliable and ornamentally rewarding. Full sun to bright indirect light with extremely porous soil is appropriate. Moderate watering during growth and complete winter drought are standard. Minimum temperature around 10°C. Its compact size and beautiful flowers make it an accessible entry into sesame-family caudex collecting.
