Cyphostemma laza is native to dry regions of southern Madagascar, belonging to the grape family (Vitaceae). Its most striking feature is the beautiful silver-gray, massively thick trunk that becomes increasingly impressive with age. Large, grape-family leaves provide lush greenery during growth before the plant sheds them in the dry season. Alongside the Namibian C. juttae, it stands as one of the premier Vitaceae caudex plants. Growth is relatively fast. Full sun, high temperatures, and extremely porous soil suit it best. Generous summer watering and complete winter drought are standard. Somewhat frost-sensitive. The combination of the silver trunk and large, bold leaves creates one of the most visually commanding presences in any caudex collection.
