The most prized juniper in bonsai. Known for jin and shari deadwood artistry. Grows wild on cliffs, creating twisted trunks that combine ruggedness and elegance.
Juniperus chinensis var. sargentii, known as Shimpaku juniper or Shimpaku, is a low-growing, spreading juniper native to rocky cliffs and alpine zones in Japan. It is considered the most prestigious juniper species in bonsai, prized for its dense, soft scale-like foliage and its capacity for dramatic deadwood artistry. The techniques of 'jin' (bleached dead branch stubs) and 'shari' (stripped bark revealing the heartwood) are most famously associated with this species. The Itoigawa variety, collected from Niigata Prefecture, is particularly revered worldwide for its exceptionally fine foliage. Growth is extremely slow, and aged specimens convey a profound sense of antiquity.
