Pinus parviflora
One of the supreme bonsai species. Short needles in bundles of five and dignified trunk character. Slow growth maintains form well. Good entry point for conifer bonsai.
Pinus parviflora, commonly known as Japanese white pine or Goyo matsu, is a pine in the white pine group (Pinus subgenus Strobus) native to the mountains of Japan. Revered as the 'king of bonsai,' it has been cultivated in Japanese bonsai for centuries, prized for its graceful needle clusters of five short bluish-green needles and its distinctive scaly bark that develops with age. In bonsai, it is valued for its elegant branching structure and compact needle growth. It requires full sun and excellent ventilation outdoors. Water when the topsoil dries, avoiding overwatering. Repot every three to five years in early spring before budding.
