Deciduous bonsai with dangling white bell-shaped flowers in early summer. Profuse bloomer with elegant appearance. Unique autumn fruits. Natural branching is beautiful.
Styrax japonicus, commonly known as Japanese snowbell (Ego-noki in Japanese), is a deciduous tree native to Japan and East Asia. In early summer (May to June), it produces an abundant display of small, nodding, bell-shaped white flowers that hang beneath the branches, creating a delicate and graceful effect. The tree's name 'Ego' derives from the saponin-rich bitter bark and fruit, historically used by Japanese fishermen as a fish stupefacient. In bonsai, it is admired for the elegant hanging flowers and the fine branching that develops with age. The multiple-trunk (kabudachi) style is particularly popular, evoking natural woodland scenes.
