Discus breeding success hinges on precision water parameter management. pH, hardness, and temperature must be tightly controlled using RO water.

Required Water Parameters

• pH: 5.5-6.5 (wild types prefer 5.0; domestic strains tolerate 6.0)
• GH: 1-4 dGH
• KH: 0-2 dKH
• Conductivity: 80-200 uS/cm
• Temperature: 28-30C (30C optimal for breeding)
• Ammonia/Nitrite: Must be zero

RO Water Preparation

Japanese tap water is typically too hard and alkaline for discus breeding.

1. Collect RO water
2. Adjust pH with peat extract or pH reducer
3. Add mineral supplement to achieve GH 1-4
4. Aerate for 24 hours
5. Verify all parameters before use

Spawning Triggers

• Large water changes (50%+) with RO water simulating rainy season
• Temperature increase from 28C to 30C
• High-protein live food conditioning for 2-3 weeks
• Pair isolation in dedicated breeding tank

Discus lay eggs on vertical surfaces. Fry feed on parental body mucus ("discus milk") for the first 2-3 weeks before transitioning to prepared foods.
